Take Quick Action in the New Ikea Dresser Recall to Protect Your Children From Tipping Dangers

Ikea has voluntarily recalled 29 million dressers that pose a dangerous tipping hazard to children. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recall was issued after six children under the age of four were crushed to death in tragic accidents where chests or dressers tipped over on them. Three of these deaths were in the last three years. In addition, 36 other children have been injured in tipping accidents, according to an ABC News investigative report.  You need to act quickly to protect your family if you have one of these dressers or chests.

How to Get Your Money Back Under the Ikea Recall

In 2015, Ikea issued a recall of the dressers and chests and provided consumers with anchors to secure the furniture to a wall. Now Ikea realizes this is not enough to protect children and is issuing a much more comprehensive recall. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The recall applies to MALM chests and drawers covered under the 2015 recall, which were sold from 2002 through June 2016 with a price range between $70 and $200.
  • Ikea will no longer sell these products.
  • Ikea will offer partial or full refunds, or a store credit depending on the model year, if consumers return their Ikea chest or drawer that is covered under the recall.
  • Consumers have the option of keeping their chest or drawer and getting a free anchoring kit from Ikea by ordering it over the phone, visiting a store, or going to the company's website. If consumers do not want to install the anchors themselves, Ikea representatives will install them at no charge.

The CPSC is urging consumers to act immediately, warning that it's too dangerous to have these chests and dressers unanchored in homes, especially around young children.
