Retailers are supposed to pull the products off their shelves when a manufacturer issues a recall. This makes sense, since the point of a recall is to protect consumers if an item has a default, may cause injury, or are hazardous.

However, not all retailers follow this standard practice. Best Buy recently agreed to pay a huge fine for violating this rule of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). As a result, this put consumers who shop at its big box stores at risk of injury from these dangerous products.

Did You Buproduct recally One of These Recalled Items From Best Buy?

In approximately July 2014, the CPSC discovered that Best Buy continued to sell 16 recalled products between 2010 and 2014. In addition, Best Buy had inadequate procedures to identify and prevent the sale of recalled items, and to block product codes that would have flagged these product.

Even worse, Best Buy continued to sell recalled items after it told the CPSC that it had implemented procedures to stop this illegal practice. As a result, Best Buy recently agreed to pay a $3.8 million civil penalty.

Best Buy sold about 600 recalled products. Some of these items include:

  • More than 400 Cannon cameras with rubber grips that could cause skin rashes
  • Colby televisions that caught fire
  • LG Electronic stoves with range burners that failed to turn off
  • GE dishwashers with defective heating elements that could fail and cause a fire
  • iSi North America Twist’n Sparkle beverage carbonation systems that could explode

You can find a list of the recalled goods Best Buy continued to sell at the CPSC website.

Best Buy isn't the only retailer engaging in this unsafe practice. Meijer settled its case with the CPSC for $2 million in fines, and a CPSC complaint against Home Depot is still open with allegations that the chain continues to sell recalled items.
