The True Meaning of Thanksgiving is Finding Ways to Give Back to the Community!
I want to take this time on Thanksgiving to give thanks to God, my family and each of you for the many blessings we have enjoyed this year. My parents taught me that where much is given much is expected. And so, in that spirit, it has been my honor this month to give back to the community along with Kevin Miller of KIDO 580 Radio by participating in the greatTurkey Drive for the Boise Rescue Mission to help feed those who are homeless or unable to afford a traditional Thanksgiving meal. There are those in our community that are suffering from addiction (drug and alcohol). Some families and individuals are homeless. Many are hungry. It was humbling to spend some of my personal time in helping Kevin Miller in the Turkey Drive this year soliticting others for donations in the form of turkeys, sundries and cash contributions to help members of our community who are down and out for the moment.
My charity work in the community is consistent with my work as a trial lawyer. My mission statement as a trial lawyer is based upon helping clients seek justice where our work together helps make our community and homes a safer and better place to live for our children and grandchildren.
Albeit as a trial lawyer I work to help clients obtain justice by holding those who are responsible and accountable for the decisions and choices they make that result in injury or death to others who are their victims, I also believe that by serving others in our community we also are about doing God’s work.
"If ye have done it unto the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."
It was amazing to hear of the stories last week of those who have participated in the Boise Recue Mission’s program. Many of the homeless that the Boise Rescue Mission serve have had difficulties with alcohol or drug addiction. Some suffer from mental illness. They have lost employment and are down on their luck. Some families were living in their cars. Some on the street.
I saw and heard first hand from those whom the Boise Rescue Mission has helped. I heard story after story about how the Boise Rescue Mission helped them by providing them with drug and alcohol recovery services. They received far more than just a warm and safe place to sleep during the cold winter months and well prepared food. They were provided with services to overcome their addiction or help with their mental illness and a number have now received their G.E.D. certification and some have even enrolled in college. Many are now got back on track and are working and self-sustaining living off the streets and in their own apartments.
It’s stories like these that inspire me as a trial lawyer. I know how devastating drug and alcohol addiction can be to an individual and to a family. Addiction can destroy lives. It’s a major cause of crime. By helping those with these sorts of problems we help make our homes and community a better and safer place to live.
When I was a lad, my mother used to read stories to me from "the good book." I remember her teaching me the concept of giving thanks and the true meaning of Thanksgiving. She taught me that there are those that "talk the talk" and there are those that "walk the walk." Giving thanks means more than giving lip service to deity about gratitude. True thanksgiving requires "walking the walk" of gratitude; it requires our dedication and effort in giving back to the community to demonstrate our true feelings of gratitude.
It was an honor and a privilege to help Kevin Miller and the Boise Rescue Mission last week feed the poor and the homeless this holiday season. By doing so, my staff and I at Morton Law Offices, Chartered give our thanks to our Heavenly Father, to our families, to our clients and to all of you for the many wonderful blessings we enjoy.
It was our privilege to give our time in support of the Great Turkey Drive by providing both time, turkeys and cash to the effort. The Great Turkey Drive received at last toll 526 turkeys along with various other sundries and cash contributions. It was inspiring to help others feed their families this Thanksgiving season.
Each year it is also my honor and privilege to help provide free legal assistance to Family Advocates and the CASA program by representing court appointed Guardian ad Litems to children who are the subject to allegations regarding child abuse or neglect. By so doing, it is my goal and objective to give back to the community and to help make our homes and community a safer and better place to live.
