Just Roll With it: Practicing Safe Biking Can Prevent Your Child’s Injury
Children look to their parents for guidance in all matters of life, including bicycle safety. Although riding bikes is favorite activity for kids, it is potentially quite dangerous. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roughly 800 bicyclists were killed and 515,000 were injured in bike accidents in 2010. Unfortunately, more than half of these victims were children.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has designated May Bicycle Safety Month. This year’s theme is “Be a Roll Model.” The belief is that when parents engage in safe biking principles themselves, their children will, as well.
How You Can Teach Your Children to Bike Safely
Before you and your child head out to Boise Hills Park, make sure you practice the following safe biking habits so that she is encouraged to do so, also:
- Wear a helmet. Although those who bike in Boise aren’t required to wear helmets, doing so is a smart idea. In a study conducted by the CDC from 2001 to 2003, only 48 percent of children ages 5 to 14 wore helmets while riding. Wearing this protection can prevent life-changing injuries and even death. Always wear a helmet when you ride and have your children wear them, too.
- Stay focused and prepared. Paying attention to what is occurring around you could stop you from getting into a bike accident. Stay off of your phone, look ahead, and expect the unexpected while riding. Doing so could save your life.
- Follow the rules of the road. Your child will likely learn the rules of the road from watching you, so following them is vital. For example, obeying traffic signs, riding defensively, and crossing the road at the designated spots is not only safe, but helps your child to learn, as well.
