Tire Blowouts and Other Problems Lead to Truck Accident Injuries and Death
When a truck accident is caused by a failure to take care of something basic, like the brakes or tires, it is also even more of a tragedy because it could have been prevented. Unfortunately, failure to inspect and maintain the truck brakes and tires are leading causes of truck crashes. When tires blow out or the tread is worn, a trucker can lose control of the truck—often when driving at a high speed—causing victims to suffer catastrophic injuries or death.
Three Ways Truck Companies Cause Truck Tire Accidents
If a truck accident is the result of problems with the tires, the truck driver and trucking company may not be the only ones responsible for compensating the victim. With defective tires or tires subject to a recall, the maintenance facility, truck manufacturer, or tire manufacturer could also face liability.
Unfortunately, trucking companies often focus on their profit and the speed of delivery rather than truck and tire safety. Truck company practices that contribute to tire accidents include:
- Failing to comply with inspection requirements. Truckers and trucking companies are required to inspect the truck’s tires before taking the truck on the road under federal rules. Results of the inspections are to be recorded in a log. When inspections are not done or problems are ignored, truck tire accidents happen.
- Using poorly maintained or bald tires. Truck tires are required to meet minimum federal standards regarding tread depth. When these are not met, the tread is worn, or the tire is bald, the trucker loses the traction the tires provide and can lose control of his truck, or worse, have a tire blowout, maybe on the highway. Even driving on tires with improper tire pressure can have disastrous results.
- Using mismatched tires. Tuck companies can use mismatched tire sizes, tires with significantly different wear and tear, or a mix of bias and radial tires to save money, resulting in accidents with deadly consequences.
