JEROME, Idaho — The Idaho Statesman and the Times-News both report that Idaho State Police have written 20% more speeding tickets since the speed limit increased to 80 mph along various segments of Interstate 84 than last year. The report also indicates that the state police issued 2,066 speeding tickets on the interstate between July 24 through November 13 as opposed to 1731 over the same period last year. The explanation for the increase is due to stricter enforcement of the speed limit by law enforcement since it was increased from 75 mph to 80 mph on certain rural stretches of the interstate.

INCREASE IN SPEED INCREASES THE DISTANCE NECESSARY TO REACT TO A ROAD HAZARD

A vehicle traveling 80 mph is traveling 117.336 feet per second. In other words, a vehicle traveling 80 mph travels the distance of a football field in approximately 2.6 seconds. Most people need a reaction time of at least 1 second; that, of course, means that a vehicle traveling at 80 miles per hour is traveling 117.336 feet before the driver is able to react to any potential hazard on the road!

Speed kills. Just because the speed limit is 80 mph doesn’t mean that you need to go the speed limit particularly when the roads are subject to being wet, snowy or icy due to inclement weather during winter conditions.
