Boise Man and His Passenger Seriously Injured in Fiery Car Accident

Posted on Mar 12, 2014

A 23-year-old Boise man suffered serious injuries in a recent crash involving three people. Just before 11:00 p.m. on February 18th, 2014, Nathaniel McDonald was travelling westbound down State Street in Garden City. He reportedly lost control of his vehicle, struck a power pole, and then sideswiped another vehicle before finally smashing into another power pole. While wrapped around this final pole, Mr. McDonald’s vehicle caught on fire.

Mr. McDonald was driving a 1994 Chevrolet Caprice at the time of the accident. His passenger in the car was Paul Swindell, age 23, of Emmett. Both Mr. McDonald and Ms. Swindell were fortunately wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. The other driver was Tanna Bell, age 25, of Middleton. She was driving 2012 Mazda 3 when Mr. McDonald struck her.

Idaho State Police responded to the crash, near the intersection of State Street and Glenwood. Troopers reported that alcohol and speeding were both factors in the crash. Mr. McDonald and Ms. Swindell were taken to an area hospital, while Ms. Bell did not state any injuries. Corporal Scott Tulleners saw the crash happen. He noted that Mr. McDonald was unconscious when he arrived at the scene. He further noted that Ms. Swindell appeared to be in a great deal of pain. The Trooper stated that he had been following the Caprice after witnessing it speeding by on State Street. When Corp. Tullener saw that the car had burst into flames, he grabbed a fire extinguisher and was able to put the flames out before they spread to the fuel line. Firefighters were then able to remove Mr. McDonald and Ms. Tullener from the car using jaws of life.

A representative of Saint Alphonsus Hospital reported Ms. Swindell’s condition to be stable as of the following morning. Mr. McDonald’s condition was still unknown.
