Man Killed in Boating Accident at Lucky Peak

Posted on May 18, 2014

BOISE – Last Friday, a boating accident occurred at Lucky Peak Reservoir taking the life of a 22 yr old man. Ada County dispatched an emergency response team to the scene and an investigation commenced to determine the cause of the boating accident that took the life of the young man.

Investigators from the Ada County Sheriff’s Office determined that the 22 yr. old and 2 others had taken the boat out on a cruise to test the boat for the upcoming summer season. The 22 yr old climbed up onto the bow of the boat, and the boat was jostled either by stalling or by hitting a wake causing the 22 yr old to fall from the boat into the water and in the process the propeller struck the man causing him to sustain severe personal injuries which took his life.

The two others in the boat were able to retrieve the 22 yr. old back into the boat and took him back to dock at Barclay Bay where they met the emergency responders. where they administered CPR to the young man without success.

Investigators concluded that the 22 yr old was "bow riding" at the time of the accident. "Bow riding" is the illegal practice of a boat passenger getting up from a seated position and then stepping up ride on the bow of the boat at cruising speed.

Ultimately, the captain of the boat is responsible for the safe operation of the boat amd the passengers therein including but not limited to insuring that all passengers are properly seated in the boat and all passengers wear a proper life vest before getting underway and during operation.
