Crash involving 3 Semi Trucks Result in 1 Dead on I-84
Posted on Mar 16, 2016
On Tuesday morning, 34-year-old Ivan Berezin of Gresham, Oregon was driving a semi-truck trailer eastbound on I-84 near Huntington, Oregon when he veered his tractor/trailer into the median. As he attempted to swerve back onto the road, he lost control of his commercial vehicle and rolled the truck onto its side completely blocking traffic on the highway. As a result of the accident, all traffic traveling eastbound was stopped.
About 30 minutes later, another semi-truck operated by a 62-year-old truck driver, Milton Vaughn of Altoona, Kansas, was reported driving at "highway speeds" and crashed into the stopped traffic created by the blockage on the highway. The driver of the semi truck that Vaughn collided into was operated by 33-year-old Abraham Garza Tanguma of Texas who was also injured in the crash and taken by ambulance to the Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Ontario, Oregon.
Vaughn’s injuries were so severe, he died at the scene of the crash.
A HazMat team was dispatched to the scene of the crash for cleanup. because Vaughn’s truck was hauling aluminum oxide power, a hazardous material. Containers of the power broke and leaked as a result of the crash requiring the HazMat team to take care of the cleanup. Traffic was blocked for 4 hours. Due to the cleanup, the eastbound lanes on I-84 were also closed for 9 hours.
The Oregon State Police are continuing their investigation.
At this time we do not know whether the truck driver who lost control of his commercial vehicle was due to sleep deprivation, inattention or equipment failure which are the most common causes of accidents caused by truck drivers on our nation’s highways.
